Second Hand September 2026: Shop Pre-Loved at Hayley's CIC

Each year, up to 40% of clothing produced worldwide goes unsold. Meanwhile, millions of garments already hanging in our wardrobes are rarely worn. The result is a growing crisis of overproduction, overconsumption, and textile waste, placing enormous pressure on our planet.

To help tackle this problem, Oxfam launched Second Hand September in 2019, encouraging people to buy only second-hand clothing for 30 days. The campaign shines a spotlight on the environmental impact of fast fashion while inspiring people to extend the life of the clothes that already exist.

What is Second Hand September?

Second Hand September is Oxfam's annual campaign that challenges shoppers to choose pre-loved fashion over new clothing throughout September.

When the campaign first launched in 2019, more than 50,000 people signed the pledge, proving that small changes in shopping habits can make a real difference.

The campaign has also gained support from well-known names, including Emma Watson and Sienna Miller. At the 2021 Earthshot Prize Awards, Emma Watson wore a stunning custom Harris Reed gown created from ten second-hand wedding dresses sourced from Oxfam shops, demonstrating that sustainable fashion can be every bit as stylish as buying new.

Why Buying Second-Hand Matters

Every item of clothing has an environmental footprint. From growing cotton and producing fabrics to manufacturing and transportation, making new clothes consumes huge amounts of water, energy, and raw materials.

According to Oxfam, around 1.6 billion unworn items of clothing are sitting in UK wardrobes. If those clothes were worn again, they would be enough to dress the entire population of Manchester for the next 450 years.

Choosing pre-loved clothing helps to:

• Reduce demand for new manufacturing.

• Lower carbon emissions.

• Save water and natural resources.

• Keep perfectly good clothing out of landfill.

• Support a more sustainable circular economy.
