The Courage to Begin: How One Small Shop Became a Community Hub

It is always hard to know where to begin, because with all great adventures and stories, there is not always a linear path.

I have a background in Early Help with the local authority, Early Years Education and my vocation focuses on community. I have interests in clothing and creativity - neither of which I have in abundance - but I do think that to be a beginner is perhaps one of the greatest things!

Too many times, people never begin anything for fear that things might go wrong. I realised when I was first opening the shop, I had individuals around me who really felt the fear. I found myself reassuring them that if it didn't work out, I would accept it, but that not to try at all would be the worst-case scenario for me.

I realise that it does take some self-belief to say, 'I am going to do something new and scary' and do it while calculating the risks and balancing out what could go wrong, with what we hope will go right.

Beginnings at the shop are what we do - people have their first sessions teaching a skill to others, individuals attend an activity they have never tried before, or we host events that are new and untested in Williton.

We simply begin.

Volunteers join the shop community to feel a sense of connection - perhaps they have retired, and life is quiet, or they have a need to give back to the community that has been important to them. Many of our volunteers have come to us through a shared love of clothing and craft, and then found themselves part of our community hub - beginning a new chapter.

Volunteers are essential to helping Hayley’s CIC achieve its mission.

We have skilled professionals who have retired and found a space to belong, supporting those in our wellbeing groups, with a role that aligns with their vocation and abilities.

Oftentimes, beginnings happen midway through journeys, and we have many new beginnings ahead of us, as we grow and develop our offer to meet the needs of the community.

We talk about the next steps and what drives us, which ultimately leads to another door opening and further connections, too.

For many people, beginning something new takes a lot of preparation and thought. Others decide to make changes on NYE and try to sustain them without too much planning.

Each morning, we begin our day with a decision about what sort of day we will have. Perhaps we will have breakfast or skip it, prepare the children for school or walk the dog. Maybe we will make a lunchbox. Other days, we might get up late and rush out the door and live in the moment.

We are in charge of the day ahead and can decide the outcome no matter what – we just have to begin.

I say at the shop sometimes that I have manifested the life I live. My family. Our home. The success of the shop and the community we have gathered. My interests in fashion, clothing and vintage align with creativity and connection. If I want something to happen or to progress, I begin with exploring possibilities out loud, and I think that on some level, these hopes and thoughts are an energy I give out, and it is invariably answered by a person coming through the door as if by magic. I believe the world is just waiting for us to begin with our dreams, so it can deliver them if only we take that first brave step forward.
