Hello! My name is Sara. Although I officially live between Bath and Bristol, I spend most of my time, especially during the summer, at my static caravan. It’s perched on the cliff, overlooking the beach and waterfall at St Audries Bay.

A Beautiful Inspiration

This area, and Somerset in general, is such an inspirational place! With the Quantocks, Exmoor, and a varied coastline, it’s a treasure trove of natural beauty. Picture picturesque villages dotted around, each with its own charm.

I have always been creative. Painting has been my outlet for relaxation throughout my life. It helps me escape the craziness of the modern world. I love spending time outside with my sketchbook. Joining Plein Air groups for painting sessions is a joy! Sometimes, I just make a mess with paints in my spare room!

Embracing New Skills

Learning new things as we get older is so important! I’ve enjoyed many workshops across the Somerset region. From wet felting to pottery, willow weaving, sculpture, and needlecrafts, there’s something for everyone. No matter what you fancy doing, there’s sure to be a group or workshop offering new skills!

I started teaching Mixed Media sessions at Hayley’s in January this year. I’m thrilled that my sessions are booking up quickly! So much so, that I now run them twice a month throughout the summer. I want to ensure everyone can join in if they want to.

The Joy of Mixed Media

Mixed Media is a wonderful medium! It can include and incorporate just about anything. If you’re doing a watercolour painting and then add a bit of crayon, it becomes mixed media. My husband jokes that it’s like ‘Blue Peter Hour’ in my house when I start gluing bits of tissue paper onto my artwork for texture!

I’ve joined the Bath and Bristol Urban Sketchers groups on many occasions. Recently, I set up a sketching group of my own. These are free sessions where people meet at a specific location to sketch whatever takes their fancy for a couple of hours. At the end, we share our work! It’s a great way to connect with others who have similar interests and meet new friends.

Balancing Creativity and Work

I’m lucky that my day job as a Wedding and Funeral Celebrant also allows me to be creative—using words! I mainly work from home, writing bespoke scripts. This flexibility gives me time to pursue my love of anything ‘arty’.

You can find out more about me and my workshops on my Facebook page.

Sara, our featured artist, is next hosting a mixed media art class on Thursday, 21st May.
